As much reading as they can.
This is not a class, it’s a club/team. We read 16 books, and in March we take a team of 4 (plus an optional 5th as an alternate) to regionals. No grades are given, but you can submit a reading log as a work sample. (Note: regionals have been held at Thurston High in Springfield for the last 3 years. No guarantee that they will be held there next year, but it’s something to consider if you live far from the area.)

This year-long course will take you on a journey through time, exploring the rich history of our beautiful state. We’ll learn about the Indigenous people who have called this land home since time immemorial, and discover how Oregon grew into the state we know today. This course integrates Tribal History, Shared History standards and 4th grade Oregon state standards on Oregon history.
We will begin with a focus on geography, and the history and cultures of Oregon’s Native American tribes. We will pull from Oregon’s Tribal History, Shared History curriculum to learn about Tribal traditions, Tribal relationships to the land and water, and oral storytelling traditions.
We will then explore Oregon’s growth as a state from the time of the Lewis & Clark expedition to today. We’ll learn about the westward expansion of the United States, Oregon pioneers and early settlers, important events and figures in Oregon’s history, and how our state has changed over time.

30-45 minutes a day. As much as needed to complete their grade level curriculum. Classtime will be a supplement to the math work they do independently.
This class is designed to support 3rd grade students as they engage with the ALEKS math curriculum, providing a consistent, encouraging space to deepen understanding and build confidence. Meeting weekly, students will have the opportunity to ask questions, work through challenging problems, and collaborate with peers in a safe and positive math community. ALEKS (Assessment and Learning in Knowledge Spaces) is an adaptive, research-based program that personalizes instruction based on each student’s current knowledge, allowing them to progress at their own pace while mastering essential math skills. During our sessions, students will receive guided support, practice problem-solving strategies, and strengthen their mathematical thinking as they navigate their individualized ALEKS learning paths. Students will complete the majority of their core math instruction independently outside of class through the ALEKS online program, using our weekly meetings as a time for support, clarification, and enrichment.
